NHS junior stars in The Nutcracker

Цитата:

Most of the time, serious ballet fans who live in smaller towns and cities just have to feel a little big-city envy. As a rule, it's the world's capitals that enjoy performances by ballet's top artists. That rule will be broken this weekend at the Brighton Performing Arts Center, when Russian Artists International, Ltd., and The Academy of Russian Classical Ballet again present a very special production of The Nutcracker.

Katya Frimenko, a 16-year-old junior at Northville High School, will take the stage dancing the lead role of "Clara" along with international guest artists, including Anton Korsakov, first soloist of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Ballet, St. Petersburg Russia.

Korsakov, who has been a member since of the Kirov Ballet since 1998, was a prizewinner at international ballet competitions in Russia (1998) and Finland (2001) and has toured extensively, dancing lead roles both in Russia and internationally in numerous ballets. A London reviewer wrote about Korsakov: "He is a dancer in the tradition of Nureyev and Baryshnikov, marrying tremendous strength with great artistic sensibility." He was previously identified as one of the Top 25 Dancers by Dance Magazine.

Also joining the cast is Lauren Strongin, a graduate of the Kirov Academy and Principal with the Sarasota Ballet of Florida. Strongin, a Principal with the Sarasota Ballet of Florida, was a finalist at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland in 2001.

Frimenko has been dancing for nine years and is a student of Sergey and Jessica Rayevskiy at the Academy of Russian Classical Ballet in Novi. She has performed many different ballet roles, including Marzipan Pas de Trois, Louisa, Snow corps de ballet, and Waltz of the Flowers in The Nutcracker, solo variation from Paquita, solo variation and pas de deux in The Sleeping Beauty, corps de ballet in Don Quixote and Giselle. She also was selected by special audition to perform roles in the Kirov Ballet's productions of La Bayadere and Sleeping Beauty at the Detroit Opera House.

Over 80 dancers from Livingston, Oakland, Wayne, Macomb and Washtenaw counties will participate in the production. Tickets are available at the Brighton Community Education Office, located at 7878 Brighton Road, Brighton, or by phone at (810) 299-4130

Residents needing to get their fix of the holiday classic "The Nutcracker" shouldn't have a problem finding a performance.

Two dance groups will perform "The Nutcracker" in Livingston County this holiday season.

The Brighton Center for the Performing Arts will host a performance of "The Nutcracker" ballet, featuring a guest dancer from Russia. The ballet will be performed Saturday, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and Sunday, 3:30 p.m., at the BCPA, located at Brighton High School.

Another version of the ballet is also coming to the county the following weekend.

The ballet is presented by the Fountain Dance Ministry (formerly the Brighton City Ballet), and will take the stage at the Jane Tasch Performing Arts Theatre in Pinckney on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.

"If they have never been to
a ballet, this would be the best one to come to," said Deborah Shiposh, a teacher at Fountain Dance Ministry.

She said people who don't normally attend ballet will enjoy "The Nutcracker."

" 'The Nutcracker' just appeals to all ages," said Shiposh. "It's not a dry ballet. It's colorful, captive and loud."

Shiposh said she's been helping direct "The Nutcracker" performances since 1986 with the Fountain Dance Ministry and retired from this task in 2005. Her daughter, Katrina Frelich, and Debbie Tweedie, decided to take up the task, and Shiposh found herself helping once again.

"It is a big production," she said. She said there are just under 100 performers in the show.

She said Laura Valentin and Armando Seda, two professional dancers from Puerto Rico, will handle the principal roles.

"It's going to be the same great performance it always is," Shiposh said.

Genoa Township resident Sergey Rayevskiy, owner of the Academy of Russian Classical Ballet, said the public response was so positive to its Nutcracker performance last year that they decided to bring it back.

The academy's dancers will be joined on stage by several international guest artists, including Anton Korsakov, first soloist of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In addition to making the choreography more traditional, Rayevskiy said they've doubled the number of performers on stage from the previous year. He said the performance will feature 80-90 people instead of 40-50.

International Ballet Stars to Visit Korea for Festival

A number of prominent dancers from all over the world will appear at the 2008 World Ballet Star Festival in Seoul. The annual festival, organized by the World Dance Center, is in its fifth year.

The Star Festival, scheduled June 5-6 at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, is a rare event where the finest dancers from major dance theaters appear together at the same time.

This year many world-renowned male dancer ― including Manuel Legris of the Paris Opera Ballet, Leonid Sarafanov of the Kirov Ballet, Daniil Simkin of the Vienna State Opera Ballet and Dmitry Belogolovtsev of the Bolshoi Ballet ― will show off their expertise to Korean audiences.

Instead of performing an entire work, the festival will offer the highlights of famous masterpieces, including ``Swan Lake'' and ``Don Quixote.''

The 44-year-old Legris is considered the ``pride of French Ballet'' and has won numerous prizes. He set the record of becoming the youngest performer of the Etoile of the Paris Opera Ballet at the age of 22. He will perform in ``Manon'' and ``Nuages'' at the festival. Sarafanov and Simkin are next-generation ballerinos, with their energy, passion and skills in interpreting ballet. Both visited Korea in 2004.

Sarafanov will appear in Tchaikovsky pas de deux, while Simkin will perform in a scene from ``Don Quixote'' and ``Moorhuhn.'' Belogolovtsev, also a prominent dancer in Russia, will perform a scene from ``Spartacus,'' choreographed by famous choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, who also participated in the National Ballet Theater's ``Romeo and Juliet'' this month.

Along with these international stars, Korea's Ha Eun-ji will perform for her native fans as a representative of the Finnish National Ballet (FNB). Ha will finish the festival with her performance of ``Petite Mort'' with another talented dancer of the FNB, Jaako Eerola.

Seoul will have a feast of ballet this year ― the American Ballet Theater will visit Korea for the first tine in 12 years in July, while the Korea Ballet Association and National Theater of Korea are holding their first ``Ballet Expo Seoul 2008'' (BES 2008) this coming August. In October, the Universal Ballet is also planning their ``Modern Ballet Project.'' The tickets for the 2008 World Ballet Star Festival costs from 30,000 won to 200,000 won.

STARS OF THE 21ST CENTURY
At the Toronto Centre for the Arts
in Toronto on Sunday

The Kirov Ballet's Yevgenia Obraztsova was the most impressive female dancer. Every move was brilliantly placed in perfect ballet positioning in both her classical Petipa pas de deux, the sad Esmeralda and the joyous Carnival in Venice. The most gorgeous movement of the evening was Obraztsova's extended backward bourée in Esmeralda. The ballerina's execution of these tiny steps on point was so, as it were, infinitesimal that she seemed to be floating.
