Re: Press, Video & News about Mariinsky Ballet
The Mariinsky Ballet’s Swan Lake is more than mesmerizingBy Dana Glassman If a second Oscar could be bestowed this week to a black swan, hands down it would go to Viktoria Tereshkina. She took to the stage as Odette/Odile in the first of seven performances of the Mariinsky Ballet’s Swan Lake. It’s been nearly 20 years since the venerable St. Petersburg company, formerly known as the Kirov, appeared in Toronto. And to say their return was mesmerizing would be an understatement. Since 1783, The Mariinsky Ballet has set the standard for classical ballet, raising the bar high for the rest of the world’s top companies. It produced Russian dance legends Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev and Natalia Makarova. There were many gifted female dancers on stage Tuesday evening, but the male talent quotient wasn’t quite on the same level. The reason for this lies partly in the ballet itself. Swan Lake was first choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky company in 1895 and was updated by Konstantin Sergeyev in 1950. But unlike James Kudelka’s rendition for the National Ballet of Canada, which puts the spotlight on the male ensemble early in the ballet, this Swan Lake focuses mainly on the women. As a result, the men don’t get a chance to show off their full capabilities. And those who do get the opportunity to shine deliver uneven performances. http://arts.nationalpost.com/2011/03/03 ... smerizing/

Mariinsky Ballet @ Lincoln Center
Mariinsky (Kirov) Ballet
It is difficult to imagine an artistic legacy closer to the heart of the classical ballet tradition than that of the Mariinsky Ballet, which has reclaimed that tsarist title after decades of being known by its Soviet name, the Kirov. In its 250 years of performing first on St. Petersburg stages and then around the world, the Mariinsky has given the world some of the greatest dancers and choreographers in the history of the art. Lincoln Center Festival and the Metropolitan Opera have joined forces in this return of the Mariinsky Ballet for these dazzling performances, their first Festival appearances in nearly a decade.
Artistic director Valery Gergiev, the dramatically imaginative musical interpreter who conducts many of these performances, is a passionate supporter of Russian music, especially the colorful orchestrations of Rodion Shchedrin. That love is eminently evident in this series, which includes Shchedrin’s full-length ballets Anna Karenina and The Little Humpbacked Horse, both choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, artist in residence at the American Ballet Theatre and a former director of the Bolshoi Ballet.
The acclaimed dancer Diana Vishneva, who The Washington Post recently called “as profoundly moving as I’ve ever seen,” takes center stage for much of this engagement. Appearances by other dancers like the up-and-coming star Alina Somova and the majestic, glamorous Ulyana Lopatkina (who has “phrasing like an unhurried angel” —Financial Times) make this a not-to-be-missed balletic experience.

Re: Press, Video & News about Mariinsky Ballet
Romantic intrigues at the MariinskyThe sensuous modern ballet ‘Le Parc’ will open this year’s International Mariinsky Ballet Festival.By Galina StolyarovaPublished: April 13, 2011 (Issue # 1651) “Le Parc,” an iconic ballet by the legendary French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj that became an instant hit when it was unveiled by the Paris Opera Ballet in 1994, enjoys its Russian premiere at the Mariinsky Theater on April 14, 15 and 22. The premiere of “Le Parc” opens this year’s International Mariinsky Ballet Festival that runs through April 24. The festival came into being in 2001 thanks to the Mariinsky’s artistic director, the indefatigable maestro Valery Gergiev. The event’s aim is to enable Russian audiences to see Western ballet stars, but in addition, it showcases the best of the theater’s own considerable talent. It also provides a counterweight to Gergiev’s other brainchild, the “Stars of the White Nights” festival, which takes place every June and is almost entirely devoted to opera and instrumental music. While the choreography in the first few festivals highlighted the glories of the imperial ballet and was heavily dominated by the venerable Marius Petipa, eventually the festival evolved into a stylistically diverse event, with the work of Michel Fokine, George Balanchine, Leonid Lavrovsky, Kenneth MacMillan, John Neumeier and William Forsythe featuring on its programs. Furthermore, the festival swiftly developed a tradition of presenting a full-scale premiere of either a work by an eminent living choreographer, or a scrupulous reconstruction of a classical masterpiece. This time, the festival’s main dish is “Le Parc,” a romantic creation inspired by 17th and 18th-century French art and literature and set to some of Mozart’s most beautiful adagios from the composer’s piano concertos, blended with the sounds of electronic music. Exploring the quest for the art of loving and sensuality, the choreographer — who is renowned as one of Europe’s most provocative and intriguing ballet masters — took inspiration from Madame de La Fayette’s novel “La Princesse de Cleves,” published in 1678, and Laclos’ epistolary novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” published in 1782, to concoct a three-act ballet drama of amorous intrigues. Faithful to its name, the action takes place in a park. The story begins with a light-hearted, flirtatious game, before Preljocaj takes the audience on a thrilling journey through episodes of seduction, resistance, consummation, conquest, manipulation and surrenders that at some stage miraculously transform into what seems to the characters to be true love. The scene depicting the culmination of love in this very refined ballet has become known as one of the most emotionally overwhelming pas de deux in the history of neo-classical ballet. Rehearsing the roles are three pairs of soloists — Diana Vishneva and Konstantin Zverev; Yekaterina Kondaurova and Yury Smekalov; and Viktoria Teryeshkina and Alexander Sergeyev. http://www.times.spb.ru/index.php?actio ... y_id=33855
