Patipa's Shades take their slow descend from the highest peaks of the Himalayan mountains. These are restless souls caught in the twilight world between life and death, dream and reality, thus doomed to wonder in this suspended state for eternity.
..............Himalayan peaks Step-step, arabesque, epaulement back; step-step, arabesque, epaulement back… and so they go until they reach the plateau and here real magic begins. Painting by Katia Medvedeva. Private collection Mariinsky Ballet When Marius Petipa composed perhaps his greatest masterpiece, he was already an established ballet master, aka premier maître de ballet at the Imperial Theatre, St. Petersburg, Russia. Court composer Ludwig Minkus is responsible for the most moving score. The ballet was created in 6 months and was an instant popular success. How much a success, perhaps not even Petipa himself dared to hope. As it happens this exotic creation of his was destined for immortality.
