Сообщение Re: The Nutcracker

The premiere of the famous ballet "The Nutcracker" (the final opus of the ballet trilogy of P.I. Tchaikovsky) took place on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg on December 6 (18), 1892. The ballet was performed along with the opera "Iolanta" based on the drama of the Danish writer Henrik Hertz "The daughter of King René." According to the music critic Herman Laroche the fashion to combine opera and ballet in one evening came from Paris Opera "where the main attraction for the audience was ballets, and operas were given for "raising the curtain."

As early as 1890, Tchaikovsky received a commission for a one-act opera and a two-act ballet (such was the practice at the time). Director of the Imperial Theaters Ivan Alexandrovich Vsevolozhsky, the grandson of Prince I. D. Trubetskoi and the head of the diplomatic mission in France, commissioned Tchaikovsky to write a score for a new ballet, deciding that after the success of "The Sleeping Beauty", this fruitful cooperation of the composer, Marius Petipa and the Mariinsky should continue.

Vsevolozhsky, who previously authored sketches to “The Sleeping Beauty” and “Sandrillon”, together with Petipa drew sketches for “The Nutcracker”. The libretto was based on Ernst Amadeus Hoffmann's fairy tale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", paraphrased to "The Story of a Nutcracker" by Alexander Dumas-father.

If only Hoffmann could imagine that his fairy tale "Nussknacker und Mausekoenig", published in the first collection of short stories and essays "Serapion Brothers" in 1819, would become a symbol of New Year's holidays thanks to the numerous theatrical productions and Tchaikovsky's music. He composed a fairy tale for the children of his friend Julius Hitzig from Poland - Marie and Fritz (their names were given to the children of Stahlbaum).

Tchaikovsky, like Petipa, didn't particularly care for the story, considering it to be ill suited for dance, and at one point he even thought of abandoning the project. In addition, the period of 1890-1891 was very trying for Tchaikovsky: many years of friendship with his patron, Nadezhda F. von Meck, ended, and he took it very hard. Also, the trip to America turned out to be very demanding and drained the composer of much of his energy. (On May 5, 1891, Peter Ilyich, conducting the New York Symphony Orchestra, opened one of the most significant sites in the world of music - Carnegie Hall). The news of the death of his sister Alexandra Ilinichna Davydova left him a broken man.

However Hoffmann's creativity teased Tchaikovsky's imagination. Returning to St. Petersburg, the composer began to work on ballet.

Сообщение The Nutcracker, for Children and Adults

    Author: Oksana Karnovich

Precious little remains from Hoffmann's original fairy tale as it came down to us from Dumas-father retelling and Petipa/Ivanov score. Hoffmann's mysticism gave way to fabulous transformations, various Christmas sweets and enchanting knick-knacks.

Following time honored tradition to invite technically strong performers from overseas, the lead role of Sugar Plum Fairy ( a character from Confurenburg, the country of sweets ) went to the Italian ballerina Antoniette Del Era. Since the ballerina studied in Berlin, she was mistakenly taken for a German. Possessing a "steel toe", she distinguished herself with a rare aplomb and almost acrobatic technique. The parts of Stalbaum's children went to the students of St Petersburg's Imperial Theater School, Stanislava Belinskaya and Vasily Stukolkin, although theirs were supporting, rather then leading roles. Various theater productions name characters differently, but in Hoffmann's fairy tale it was Marie and Clara was her doll.

Being in the prime of his creative powers (ahead lied "Swan Lake" (1895) and "Raymonda" (1898)), Petipa enthusiastically embarked on his favorite genre - the ballet-extravaganza, but in the middle of rehearsals he got ill and it fell upon Lev Ivanov, Petipa's associate, to continue and complete the production.

A talented choreographer in his own right, Ivanov was often sidelined and his name was omitted in favor of that of Petipa. An intensely modest person, he remained underappreciated - even 20th anniversary of his service to Mariinsky passed unnoticed. Certain measure of fairness was restored when the English choreographer Peter Wright made a plausible attempt to recreate some of Ivanov's choreography, which was finally included in the English Royal Opera House production of The Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker and Petipa part ways when the choreographer fell into deep depression after the untimely death of his daughter. The work was shifted to Petipa's assistant Lev Ivanov. In collaboration with him, Tchaikovsky finished his ballet.

Later on, after the premiere, the newspapers reported that Petipa intended to present his new version of the ballet. However, these plans were not to be: the choreographer never returned to this project.

Over time, Ivanov's original production was partially modified, yet general composition remained the same, until in 1934 it finally established itself in Russia in the version of Vasily Vainonen. Vainonen's name was featured as chief choreographer, while names of Petipa and Ivanov were dropped from the playbill.

Masha and Nutcracker became main characters replacing Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince Pertussis, while dancing dolls in the first act took names of Ballerina / Arap and Joker / Harlequin from Fokin's ballets "Petrushka" and "Carnival" respectively.
