The Mariinsky Ballet returns to London with serene authority. This St Petersburg company prides itself as the birthplace of many of ballet’s greatest classics. Looking over the ranks of dancers, you see clear lines, gorgeously pliant backs, a glowing belief in their style.
The imperious Viktoria Tereshkina isn’t obvious casting for Kitri, the innkeeper’s daughter. As Basil, Kim soars on with a divinely high leap, but he’s not naturally cheeky.

Don Quixote’s dream is a stageful of women in pastel tutus. It’s as fluffy as candyfloss, but the dancers’ discipline saves it from too much sugar. Tereshkina’s grandeur shines out in her clear lines and delicate phrasing. Ekaterina Chebykina, as the Queen of the Dryads, moves with expansive grace and warmth.

In the final pas de deux, Kim and Tereshkina combine elegance with dazzle. His jump hangs in the air, giving him time to unfold slowly from one pose to the next, while his spins are both bold and smooth. Tereshkina flutters her fan with glittering wit, even while whizzing through multiple fouetté turns. There’s a lovely contrast between her beautifully shaped poses and the sparkling speed of her footwork.

Across the company, there are assured performances, including a dashing fandango from Elena Bazhenova and a lively Mercedes from Olga Belik.

Diana Vishneva’s stillness is the best thing in the Mariinsky Ballet’s Anna Karenina. After declaring her love for Vronsky, she gazes out at the audience, her expressive face filled with misgiving and fear for the future. It’s a rare moment of emotional depth in a lightweight, underpowered production.

The choreography is all process, hurrying through the story without slowing down enough to explore it.

Vishneva brings warmth and fluid line to Ratmansky’s dances, and vivid presence to every scrap of mime. She uses her dark eyes wonderfully: watching her husband, her lover and her son, she shows Anna torn between conflicting needs. Viktor Baranov suggests repressed feeling under Karenin’s coldness, while Konstantin Zverev makes Vronsky a handsome, energetic presence. Svetlana Ivanova and Filipp Stepin are brisk and elegant as Kitty and Levin, though their roles are too underdrawn to offer much contrast with Anna’s relationships.

As Carmen, Diana Vishneva has great presence, but she can’t lift Alonso’s clichéd poses. The rest of the cast is stolid: when Konstantin Zverev is a stolid Jose, while Evgeny Ivanchenko’s bullfighter looks pompous.

Taking on an unfamiliar style, the Mariinsky get halfway. They have the bendiness for McGregor’s steps, but his twisting, undulating flow of movement is still a reach for them. Some slip back into more familiar classical lines; others rise to the challenge. It takes a while, but they ease into the work’s brooding, lyrical tone.
Nadezhda Batoeva catches the melancholy of Max Richter’s score, a sense of introspection in her long, fluid phrases. Ekaterina Kondaurova is emphatic as the lonely woman in a crowd. Though her silent scream risks melodrama, she dances with authority and nerve.

A suite of dances for a Spanish heroine, her partner, soloists and corps de ballet, it’s a party piece with plenty of chances to show off. Though this performance was strongly cast, it falls short on dazzle. The corps de ballet are perky rather than joyful.
There’s a sense that the Mariinsky is resting on its laurels: given how good these dancers are, it should be better.

In the ballerina role, Viktoria Tereshkina has speed, authority and laser precision, but she doesn’t make it personal. For all her skill, she misses the ballet’s sense of celebration. There’s more warmth from the ardent Vladimir Shklyarov, whose soaring jump and tender partnering feel vividly individual. Among the soloists, Kondaurova dances on a grand scale, her long limbs sweeping. Batoeva brings delicate musical phrasing to her solo.

Parish dances with expansive warmth and presence. He has a velvety flow of movement: plenty of power, but no strain in showing it off. His jumps are high and clean, his feet beautifully stretched. He’s a tender partner for Viktoria Tereshkina’s assured Swan Queen.

His aristocratic bearing fits beautifully with Mariinsky style, but he hasn’t lost touch with the dramatic strengths of his British training. You can see this prince thinking and reacting: his wonder at his first sight of the Swan Queen, a moment of cold resolution when he decides to fight the wicked magician. He brings a narrative drive to the Mariinsky’s leisurely production.

Tereshkina is a Swan Queen of classical authority. I love the sorrowful carriage of her head, and the intelligence with which she shapes every step. As Odile, the heroine’s wicked double, she emphasises the echoes of the swan choreography, underlining why the hero is deceived, then pounces with wicked relish. She’s a strong ballerina, not an extrovert one: you never question her power, but Parish’s
personality comes more strongly over the footlights.
This was a performance that showed how much he has learned from the Mariinsky – but also how much he brings to the company that took him up and nurtured him.

A mighty warrior overpowered by suspect parrots - La Bayadère, Mariinsky, Covent Garden, review

here has been plenty to relish during the Mariinsky’s three-week visit to London this year – but, at the same time, have we had to make too many allowances for a company of this stature? Don Quixote was a super performance of an emotionally and intellectually vapid ballet; in Swan Lake, a gallant prince was let down by an irritating production and a diffident Odette-Odile; and not even a radiantly on-form Diana Vishneva could compensate for the so-so steps and punishing score in Anna Karenina.

Although very enjoyable overall, the Contrasts mixed bill was tainted by the inclusion of the curious Carmen Suite (and that, by a stolidly un-charismatic Escamillo) and also by flutters of imperfection in the corps in the Grand Pas from Paquita. What’s more, it also feels perverse to have given Viktoria Tereshkina four out of five opening nights. An unfortunate injury was partly to blame for this, but only partly – a company with such a wellspring of talent shouldn’t be leaning so heavily on one ballerina, however capable she may be.

Certainly, Thursday night’s La Bayadère, with which the company is wrapping this season, was decidedly alpha-gamma, and arguably more gamma than alpha. On the positive side, in this rendering of Petipa’s 1877 fantasy-romance, there was a stellar performance from Kimin Kim as the warrior Solor, betrothed to the calculating Rajah’s daughter Gamzatti, but illicitly in love with Nikiya, the temple dancer of the title. Calling to mind the former Mariinsky star Igor Zelensky in his pomp (there is no higher praise), the Korean-born principal combined noble height and line with a gasp-inducing jump, ice-skater-fast turns and marvellous precision – a warrior indeed, and a virile and credibly smitten partner to the doomed heroine.

As Nikiya, Tereshkina (they might as well rename the company the Tereshkinsky) danced with her customary pin-sharp musicality and professionalism, and she and Kim – who launched the season together in Don Quixote – made a commendably tight unit. However, the casting at times felt topsy-turvy.

First soloist Nadezhda Batoeva can’t yet fill a stage with movement the way Tereshkina does – the latter’s “projection” is strikingly good. But she’s a pretty dancer and a lustrous presence: the dewy femininity and wisp of vulnerability that she brought to the supposed villainess might have better suited Nikiya, whereas Tereshkina’s sinewy frame, more angular face and diamond-hard confidence often felt more Gamzatti-like. In the Act I Scene 2 struggle between them, Nikiya was the more domineering and frightening of the two – the wrong way round, surely.
Elsewhere in the cast, Grigory Popov etched long, lean lines in the air as the fakir, so much so that you wished he’d also been able to take on the gymnastic cameo role of the Golden Idol, which fell flat in Vasily Tkachenko’s delivery. The latter was the sort of missed opportunity you really don’t expect of the Mariinsky, and on Thursday night the same repeatedly went for the corps.

In fairness, they pulled out all the stops for the famous descent down the ramp in the Kingdom of the Shades, Solor’s ravishingly simple hallucination scene. This is traditionally the highlight of any performance of Bayadère, and for five minutes or so, the hairs duly prickled. But once the 32 shades were on the flat, they seemed to – as it were – take their foot off the pedal, and little inconsistencies in bearing and positioning started to creep in. Similarly, hands and arms were often at decidedly varying angles in the Act I ensembles, while the large-scale dances with fans and (I think) parrots were a virtual free-for-all in terms of which way the props were pointing.
And oh, those poor, mercilessly brandished parrots. The RSPB would have raged had these fowl been remotely real, and they were typical of a pantomimically outdated production that groans with suspect fauna. The hunters return on a life-size but concrete-rigid elephant-on-wheels, ferrying with them a beleagured, misshapen soft-toy tiger that’s more Bagpuss than Shere Khan. The snake with which Gamzatti kills Nikiya looks straight out of a joke shop, and when a reluctant rubber python starts wibbling its way out of a charmer’s basket, the world of Carry On feels far too near.

This is all to say that one tittered far too often at a story that is emphatically not a comedy, in a production that – despite its nicely drawn sets – lets down the narrative in another, fundamental way. The Kingdom of the Shades is an exquisite episode that ups the emotional ante but essentially puts the plot on hold, and, in a traditional Bayadère, it comes – satisfyingly – in the middle. However, the Soviet-era reworking on offer here puts it at the end, ditching a significant swathe of the narrative (which now basically screeches to a halt at the end of Act II), making the whole thing feel like a symphony with two fast movements followed by one slow. There was some fantastic dancing from the leads in Act III on Thursday, but it all felt in the wrong place.

So, a season of mixed blessings, and one that, despite some wonderful individual performances, only rarely matched the smart programming and effervescent, across-the-board brilliance that the Bolshoi brought to the same stage last year. One awaits the venerable Mariinsky’s return (probably just a few years hence) with great interest, and hopes for a little rolling up of sleeves in the meantime.

An evening of Contrasts from the Mariinsky Ballet

Throughout, Carmen interacts with three men: Alexander Romanchikov, a precise but rather subdued Corregidor, Evgeny Ivanchenko, a sharp but timid Torero and her love, Konstantin Zverev, whom I found most compelling as Don José during the pas de deux when Carmen woos him back into her arms after being caught seducing Torero. Whilst sound, all were shadowed by the resplendent Diana Vishneva who carried the weight of the whole production on her shoulders. She was stunning to watch, the free spirit of Carmen building up in her spine and jumping out of her limbs in pure joy despite an at times deceptively constrictive choreography. She flirted with the floor through the tip of her shoe, tamed Carmen’s fire through her spine, and then let it free at the height of the notes, as if the score was pulsing through her body. Vishneva tempered her seductive power as she lingered through the pas de liaison and nuances of an otherwise flashy choreography of kicks and tricks which she negotiated with in a way only a truly accomplished artist of her calibre could manage.
Alonso negotiates the shortcuts by featuring Fate, a female character looming over and sometimes mirroring Carmen’s moves and Ekaterina Chebykina’s crystal technique, delicate presence and elastic ballon brought light to the role.

It’s a strikingly accurate depiction of contemporary society. Infra washes over you like a fresh morning’s ephemeral dew, but offers moments of intense beauty. Nadezhda Batoeva and Ekaterina Kondaurova stood out, subliming McGregor’s sinuous movement with
distinctive finesse.

Viktoria Tereshkina and Vladimir Shklyarov, both compelling and assured in these roles.
...however the Mariinsky was excellent in this final bouquet. Throughout, the corps sections, variations (Batoeva and Kondaurova stood out again) and the pas de deux, faultless technique, impeccable musicality and stylistic precision demonstrated the company is still, by far, one of the very best classical ballet ensembles in the world.

:Too many relatively inexperienced dancers were cast in the leading roles? Some of them came on stage but did not ‘announce their presence’ sufficiently to make an impact. Some facial expressions look strained. Some characterisations were weak. Some dancers/partners appeared over-exposed by the technical demands on them. Some performances felt ‘uneven’ (e.g. two impressive acts; one weaker one). At times, there was refinement when a sense of ‘energy’ was also needed. In other words, there were probably not enough fully ‘rounded’ artistes on show this time. [There is a bit of a gap in the roster between the 30/40 something Principals and Soloists and the 20 something up-and-comings who, two theatres notwithstanding, may still lack stage experience.]

For all its unity and beauty, the corps did not look fully engaged in the proceedings; ‘vacant’ eyes do carry across the footlights. And chatting among the groups of men takes me back to a poor tour in the 90s when talking on stage was rife.

Some ‘character’ players perhaps did not inhabit their roles sufficiently. Yes, I’m pointing my finger at you Toreador and you High Brahmin. Russian companies do tend specialise in ‘hammy’ acting but at least, if they do that, they show us who they are meant to be. This commitment was missing in places for me.
